Student Safety
Student campaign
This September and October, as the new academic year begins and students are starting or returning to their studies, we want to ensure they stay safe and remember their university days for all the right reasons.
As students may be living independently for the first time, or moving into new accommodation, it's a great opportunity to share important home fire safety advice. We also want to help students stay safe when they are out and about, which is why we are supporting the national 'Don't Drink and Drown' campaign - reminding people if they are heading out for a drink to choose a route home away from water.
Home fire safety advice for students
- Complete the Online Home Fire Safety Check for personalised home fire safety advice and to find out if you are eligible for a Home Fire Safety Assessment.
- Avoid distractions while cooking and never cook when under the influence of alcohol. Read more cooking fire safety advice.
- If you live in a flat, ensure you know the evacuation plan for your building. If you don’t, speak to your landlord/managing agent for the building. Find out more about flat fire safety.
- Know your escape route and practice it with housemates. In the event of a fire in your home, remember: get out, stay out and call 999.
Water safety advice for students
- If you’re out enjoying a drink, choose a safe route home away from water.
- If you see someone in trouble in the water, remember ‘call, tell, throw’ (call 999, tell them to float on their back, throw something to help them float).
- If you find yourself in trouble in water, float to live (external website).
