Firefighters called to fewer incidents over this Halloween and Bonfire period
- Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) thanks residents as initial data shows crews called to significantly fewer incidents compared to last year
- Firefighters attended 138 fewer incidents between October 31 and November 5
- ‘Bang Out Of Order’ campaign encourages residents to enjoy Halloween and Bonfire period safely
Firefighters attended fewer incidents over the Halloween and Bonfire period, initial data shows.
There was a 16 per cent (278) fall in calls received by North West Fire Control (NWFC) between the dates of October 31 and November 5. This resulted in Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) crews attending 138 (14 per cent) fewer incidents across the city region, a reduction in all but one borough.
This includes 44 fewer incidents on Bonfire Night itself, from 328 in 2024 to 284 in 2025, a fall of 13 per cent.
The period remains the busiest time in the year for GMFRS, with our ‘Bang Out Of Order’ campaign highlighting the consequences of attacks on emergency service workers and other antisocial behaviour, and how the public can report it, while giving residents tips and advice for how to enjoy a safe Bonfire Night.
Deputy Mayor for Safer and Stronger Communities, Kate Green, has joined crews during this period to see the effect the period has on our firefighters firsthand.
She said: “It is encouraging to see that the number of calls received has fallen this year. This gives our crews more time and resources to deal with potential serious emergencies that can happen at any time of year.
“Our staff do great outreach and prevention work in the buildup to this period, sharing safety advice in schools and elsewhere in the city region while also carrying out inspections at shops to ensure fireworks are stored and sold safely.”
Sarah Nattrass, GMFRS’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, said:
“I saw firsthand the tireless work our crews carried out over Bonfire Night. They worked incredibly hard to deal with fires in often tough conditions.
“This period isn’t just about tackling fires or other incidents on the night, but the fantastic prevention and outreach work that is done in the buildup to encourage people to enjoy it safely.
“Thank you to the vast majority of residents who had a safe and fun Bonfire Night.”
