Vision Zero
Vision Zero
The safety of our roads effects us all. Across Greater Manchester, we walk, wheel, cycle, ride, bus, tram and drive along our road network. Roads connect people, communities and businesses. It is essential that our road network works safely and efficiently, so we can all reach our destinations as planned.
The overall objectives of Vision Zero are:
-
For Greater Manchester to have zero fatalities and life changing injuries on our roads by 2040, whilst increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.
-
To reduce deaths and life changing injuries by 50% by 2030, achieving the UN's ambitious goal of halving road traffic deaths by 2030.
Adopting the Safe System Approach
To make our roads safer we are adopting the Safe System Approach, which is internationally recognised as best practice across the road safety industry. A Safe System is one where people, vehicles and the road infrastructure interact in a way that secures a high level of safety.
The Safe System approach requires us to take a systemic approach to reducing road danger, strengthening all parts of the system, so that where there are failures, as there inevitably will be, the rest of the system is able to minimise the outcomes.
