Applying for a licence

You may apply for either a renewal of an existing Explosives Licence OR a new Explosives Licence.

You must apply for a new explosives licence if:

  • Your explosives licence has expired
  • You have not held an Explosives Licence before.
  • You are applying for an Explosives Licence at a new address.

You can only renew an Explosives Licence which has not expired and you are applying to store at the same address.

First time applying?

Before applying you must be able to prove you are the owner for the proposed store or have a valid lease in place. You are required to send proof of this once your application has been submitted.

Payments

Payments will not be refunded once your application has been accepted, it is your responsibility to ensure you have read the supporting documentation on our website and you have applied for the correct Hazard type and quantity for your store.

Adjoining Domestic Premises

This means accommodation that could be above,on the same level and/or below the shop and either owned by you or private dwelling that joins onto your premises e.g terrace or semi-detached house.

Hazard Type Details

Hazard Type 4: You may store up to 250kgs NEC before separation distances are applied. If the proposed store is adjoining or in the same building as domestic/sleeping accommodation, the quantity you can store may be restricted to up to 75kgs NEC.

Hazard Type 3: You may only store up to 25kgs NEC before separation distance are applied. If you think you may wish to store HT4 at some time during the selling period then please choose a Mix of HT4/HT3.

Mix of HT4 and HT3: When storing both hazard types all the explosives will be classed as HT3, therefore you may only store 25kgs NEC before separation distances apply.

If you intend to store any Hazard Type 3 you may be restricted to 25kgs NEC in total unless you can meet the required separation distances. If you think you may also wish to store HT4 at a later date then please chose a Mix of HT3/HT4.

Selling Dates

  • Bonfire Period (15th October to the 10th November)
  • Diwali (On the day of Diwali and the 3 days immediately preceding it)
  • New Year (26th December to the 31st December)
  • Chinese New Year (On the first day of the Chinese New Year and the 3 days immediately preceding it)

If you intend to sell fireworks at any other time than the dates specified above you will need to apply for a sales licence. This licence is in addition to the storage licence.
