Part time (retained) Firefighters deliver the vital backup and support we need to save lives. And you could be one of them.

Retained Firefighters provide part time Firefighter cover across three of our Stations within Greater Manchester; these are Littleborough in Rochdale, Marple in Stockport and Ramsbottom in Bury.

Retained Firefighters often have another regular occupation and are mobilised using pagers, providing their employer authorises their absence, or provide cover that does not impact on their main job i.e. evenings and weekends dependent on their regular working hours.

Whilst the role of the Retained Firefighter in principle holds some of the responsibilities of a Wholetime Firefighter, there are some distinct conditions that must be met and distinguish the two roles from each other.

The qualifying conditions are;

• You must be able to arrive to one of these stations within 4 minutes at normal road speed when required. This usually means that the base location you are providing cover from is no more than 1 mile from the station. You must also consider before applying any obstacles that may impede you arriving to the station from your base location within this timeframe of 4 minutes i.e. railway crossings, known traffic patterns.
• You must be able to provide cover for at least 70 hours per week. Most of our Retained Firefighters provide between 70 and 120 hours cover per week and our biggest requirement is to bridge cover at both stations Monday to Friday from 6pm-6am and 24 hours across Saturday and Sunday.
• You will also be required to meet a set of basic and essential standards.
