Appointment Of Independent Member

Greater Manchester Fire And Rescue Authority Standards Committee

Appointment Of Independent Member

Are you interested in contributing to the high ethical standards currently maintained by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority?

The Authority's Standards Committee currently comprises three Elected Members of the Authority and three Independent Members, one of which is a new position. The Committee is responsible for promoting and maintaining high ethical standards in the conduct of the Authority's business, and currently has two Independent Member vacancies.

The role of the Committee has changed as a result of the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007. Under the new arrangements, which came into force in May 2008, the Standards Committee will now receive all complaints relating to the Code of Conduct and will decide;

  • Whether to refer the complaint for further action locally; or
  • Whether to refer the complaint to the Standards Board; or
  • Whether no further action should be taken.

Aside from asking for an investigation, the Standards Committee will also be able to recommend a case be resolved by alternative means such as mediation or training. The role the Standards Committee already has in the determination of Code of Conduct complaints will continue.

To be eligible to serve as an Independent Member, you will not be, or have previously been, a Member or Officer of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, or any other body having a Standards Committee. Members of the Standards Committee meet around 3 times a year and receive remuneration of £286.46 per annum.

Applications are therefore invited from interested persons who can uphold personal integrity, absorb key information and demonstrate good team working abilities.

Further information about the role of the Standards Board for England can be found at www.standardsboard.gov.uk.

The closing date for applications is Friday 26th September 2008.
