Smoke alarm saves lives

SMOKE alarms fitted by fire crews in Wythenshawe helped to save the life of a woman in her ground floor flat last night.

Two crews from Wythenshawe and one from Cheadle were called to a 'persons reported' fire on Byland Walk in the Woodhouse Park area at 8.19pm.

Crews broke into the property and teams wearing breathing apparatus rescued the woman.

The fire, caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette had damaged the bedroom of the flat which had previously had smoke alarms fitted during a Home Safety Check carried out by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. (GMFRS)

The flat above the fire had also recently had smoke alarms fitted by GMFRS.

Crews from Wythenshawe will today carry out a leaflet drop in the area offering free Home Fire Safety Checks, which would include the fitting of smoke alarms.

Remember, a working smoke alarm is your first line of defence against fire. If you have a smoke alarm, check it is working.
