Firefighters to carry out exercise in Bolton Town Centre

FIREFIGHTERS are running an exercise that will allow them to practice their procedures for dealing with chemical incidents.

Crew made up from fire stations around the borough will be in Bolton Town Centre from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday, October 21, 2014.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has worked with Bolton Council over recent months to plan the exercise and a room in the Albert Halls will be used on the day.

The scenario will involve a suspicious package being received in the mail sorting office and will unfold in the town hall with some of its workers playing casualties.

Watch Manager Karsten Boyle, from Bolton Central Fire Station, said: “Months of planning and preparation have gone into the exercise with Bolton Council’s Emergency Planning team and we will be contacting businesses in the vicinity making them aware to save disruption and panic.

“On the day there will be a sign visible so shoppers and workers in Bolton Town Centre should realise there isn’t a real life emergency ongoing and we will be able to speak to people at the cordon during the exercise.”

No roads will be closed on the day and there will be access to all businesses around the cordon.
