Get on your bike - with our help!

RED might be the colour synonymous with the fire service but for March we are going green - by going bike bananas.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has decided to encourage firefighters, staff and the communities they serve to ditch their dirty motors and take to their bicycles for a number of reasons.

A number of free Dr Bike repair clinics will be held at fire stations for commuters to get their bikes road-ready and Climate Week takes place.

For GMFRS employees, the salary sacrifice scheme to buy a discounted bike reopens and grants become available from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to install cycle facilities at work places.

Watch Manager Dave Wilson from Stockport Fire Station can be heard talking about the benefits of the Cyclescheme on youtube. Watch the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhjcXUbCR0I&feature=player_embedded.

Councillor David Acton, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority Chairman, said: "The role of GMFRS is not just about preventing and fighting fires and rescuing people - we have a responsibility to improve the lives of our communities overall and looking after the environment is one way of doing that.

"With TfGM, we are putting on sessions that will help those in our communities who want to get back on their bikes this spring and, potentially, allow us to install equipment and facilities that will encourage more of our staff to take to two wheels."
