GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has proved to be a true trailblazer when it comes to apprenticeship standards.
The Business Fire Safety Advisor (BFSA) Apprenticeship was developed as a route into the business fire safety arena for young members of the public of Greater Manchester.
An apprenticeship standard is being developed by the Trailblazing Working Group which includes fire and rescue services, Skills for Fire and Rescue Service, Royal Air Force Fire Service, Fire Protection Association and The Fire Officers Association.
The Business Fire Safety Advisor standard was submitted to Business, Innovation and Skills at the beginning of March and has now been approved.
Director of Prevention and Protection, Assistant County Fire Officer Peter O’Reilly, said: “We’re joining forces with organisations from across the fire and rescue sector to design a new Business Fire Safety apprenticeship.
“We want to make other organisations in our sector aware of the apprenticeship scheme.
“The apprentices will offer advice and education to individuals and businesses to help them keep their premises safe from fire.
“We have set the bar high in terms of standards and as a result we have been praised for just that.”
The apprenticeship content and level is based upon The Competency Framework for Business Fire Safety Regulators.
The next steps will be the development of an associated high level assessment plan. It is anticipated that the Standard and associated framework will be complete and ready to be used by September 2015.
