TWO men who risked their lives to try and save a pensioner whose home was on fire have had their bravery recognised by the County Fire Officer of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. (GMFRS)
Karl Heaver and Robert Barker have been praised for the courage they showed in helping their neighbour, 82-year-old Leslie Cunliffe, who sadly died in hospital five days later.

Today, (Monday, January 9, 2012) they were presented with Letters of Congratulation at Wigan Fire Station by GMFRS Area Manager Geoff Harris.
In the early hours of September 16, 2011, both men awoke to the sounds of a fire and cries for help. Calling 999, they then ran out into the street and tried to save their neighbour. Finding Mr Cunliffe at the side of his house with his clothes on fire, they dragged him to a place of safety and patted out the flames.
Unfortunately Mr Cunliffe died in hospital with 36% burns to his body.
In a ceremony attended by Wigan Borough Manager Steve Sheridan, Fire Authority Councillors, firefighters and the families of Mr Barker and Mr Heaver, it was heard that Karl and Robert stayed with Mr Cunliffe until fire and ambulance crews arrived.

Borough Manager Steve Sheridan said: "It's apparent that Karl and Robert's actions gave Mr Cunliffe the very best possible chance of survival. Although it is very sad that Leslie Cunliffe did not survive, today is a day to acknowledge the courageous actions of these men.
"The County Fire Officer wishes to acknowledge the outstanding and heroic bravery you showed."

Area Manager Geoff Harris said: "I've been serving with GMFRS for almost 30 years and I've only been to one or two of these, it is rare and extremely courageous.
"In very dangerous circumstances and without regard for their own safety what the two men did was exceptionally brave. However, we wouldn't encourage people to put themselves in dangerous positions."
