MORE than 80 youngsters in Bolton enjoyed a day of fun activities while learning life-saving skills and how to protect their homes against fire and other risks.
Firefighters from Bolton Central Fire Station, along with members of the borough's Community Fire Safety team, spent the day at Bolton Lads and Girls' Club on Thursday, January 5.
Children aged between eight and 13, who have not yet returned to school after the Christmas break, were taught how to check for responses from a casualty in an emergency using role play 'real-life' situations, and how to perform chest compressions and rescue breaths on someone who is unconscious.
Bolton Watch Managers Andy Hardman and Kirk Cornwall led the day's activities which also included football, boxing, and a fire-related quiz.

The children also learned the importance of calling for help immediately in the case of an emergency, to ensure that help arrives as soon as possible to give any casualties the best chance of survival.
Information on how to stay safe during the winter period was handed out as part of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's Safe4Winter campaign.
Watch Manager Kirk Cornwall said: "It's the first time we have run this project at the club and it was really positive, the CPR went down really well with the children and they all loved the whole day. Now we will look at how we can improve it even further and hope to hold more days like this - it's something the Community Fire Safety team is really enthusiastic about.
"Predominantly we have reached young people via school visits in the main and not really had many dealings with community groups, and I think it's something we need to do more often because it's a great way to get the message across to a wider audience about fire safety in the home. At a club like this we can reach children from all over the borough rather than just one area at a school."
