Candle left unattended sets fire to books

Borough: Bolton

Incident Date: 06 February 2012

A Candle left unattended set fire to a bookcase at a house in Bolton last night.

A crew from Bolton North and one from Bolton Central were called to Eldon Street in Tongue Moor at 7.01pm.

Wearing breathing apparatus to fight the fire with a hose reel, crews then carried out a Home Safety Check after smoke alarms that had been fitted to the property had been taken down.

Councillor David Acton, Chair of Greater Manchester Fire Authority said: "Never leave candles unattended and keep them away from anything that could catch fire, such as curtains.

"It's really important to place them in a proper holder where they can't fall or be knocked over.

"Remember, a working smoke alarm is your first line of defence.  Test it once a week!"
