Flat fire - Stalybridge
At 3.39am on Wednesday (Nov 2) crews from Ashton, Stalybridge and Hyde were called to a fire at St George’s House, Cambridge Street, Stalybridge.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish a fire in a flat involving a chair. The fire was contained to the room in which it started and one female resident had safely left the property before fire crews arrived.
Firefighters also searched neighbouring flats to ensure residents were safe. Positive pressure ventilation fans were used to clear smoke from the property and the crews were on scene for 90 minutes.
The cause of the fire was accidental.
Crew Manager Colin Wheeler said: “We believe the most likely cause of this fire was carelessly discarded smoking materials and we would like to urge all smokers to safely extinguish cigarettes and dispose of them responsibly.
“If possible, try and smoke outside your property but if you do have to smoke indoors, never smoke in bed, keep ashtrays regularly emptied and most important, make sure you have a correctly fitted and working smoke alarm on each floor of your property.”
