The building on Fitton Hill just off Rosary Road was causing a huge smoke plume over Oldham.

Six fire engines, the Air Unit and an aerial appliance have been tackling the fire, which is now well under control.

Incident Commander Threader said: “we’ve been working hard to keep the fire under control. It’s causing a lot of smoke but we would like to reassure people that we have everything in hand. Keep your windows and doors shut and stay away from the area if possible”.

Rosary Road has been closed off by police while we deal with the incident.

Local authorities are liaising with United Utilities and Public Health England to make sure the area is safe.

Our crews have done a phenomenal job keeping the fire from getting out of control and will likely stay through the night to damp down the site of the fire.

An investigation into the cause will be carried out once it is safe to do so.
