A BEDROOM was destroyed after a cigarette caused a fire at a house in Halliwell.
Two fire engines from Bolton Central Fire Station were called out to the blaze at a house on Horace Street just after midnight on Tuesday, February 7.
Four firefighters in breathing apparatus went in and tackled the fire with a hose reel.
They used a fan to clear the smoke once the fire was out.
Five people had escaped the house without any injuries.
It is thought the cause of the fire was a cigarette that had been put out in a waste paper bin.
If you are a smoker you can help to protect your home against
fire by following these simple steps:
• Always double-check that your cigarette is fully stubbed
out
• If you're feeling drowsy, are drinking alcohol or are taking
prescription drugs, take extra care when smoking
• Don't light up if you need to lie down and never smoke in
bed
• Don't leave a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe lying around
• Always keep lighters and matches out of the reach of
children
• Use a proper ashtray and ensure the ashtray is heavy and made of
a material that won't burn
• Never tap ash into a waste paper basket
