Firefighters called to chemical spillage in school

At 12.43pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 North West Fire Control received reports of an incident at a high school in Swinton.

Three fire engines, from Agecroft and Farnworth, were sent to Ambrose Barlow RC in Ash Drive, along with GMFRS’ environmental protection unit.

A quantity of chemicals had been spilled in a store room in the school, which firefighters contained to the room before absorbing them.

Two members of staff from the school were treated by ambulance staff, with one being taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

The school was evacuated as a result of the incident.

As of 2.30pm firefighters remained at the school.

Update 17:10 -

Firefighters have now left the scene after several hours.

Four chemical protection suits, six breathing apparatus and three gas detectors were used to tackle the incident.
