Pensioner escapes dehumidifier blaze in bedroom

Borough: Oldham

Incident Date: 03 February 2012

A PENSIONER escaped a blaze in his bedroom after a dehumidifier caught fire in Royton.

Two crews from Chadderton Fire Station were called out to Mayfair Drive at 12.30am on Friday, February 3.

Firefighters found a fire in the bedroom of a bungalow, two of the crew went in wearing breathing gear and used a hose reel to extinguish the blaze.

Once the fire was out, they used a fan to clear the smoke.

A 75-year-old man had escaped the house before the crews arrived. He was checked over by the firefighters and then paramedics but did not want to go to hospital.

It is thought the fire started as a result of a fault on a dehumidifier that was in the room.

Firefighters carried out a Home Safety Check following the blaze and fitted three smoke alarms for the man.
