Incident Date: 30 November 2014
FIREFIGHTERS have spent the early hours tackling a large blaze in a unit at Wingates Industrial Estate, Westhoughton.
North West Fire Control sent crew from Horwich, Hindley and Atherton stations just after 2am this morning (Sunday, November 30, 2014).
A fire involving a large metal shipping container and two waste paper compactors had broken out at the side of a unit measuring the size of a football pitch.
Firefighters used covering jets and hand-held jets to extinguish the intense fire.
Station Manager, Kev O’Connor, said: “When firefighters arrived the fire it was very well developed.
“Initially they had difficulty gaining entry to the building due to a series of doors which were in place for security reasons.
“There was also a unit containing inks which were flammable so it was really important to have a strict firefighting plan in place as the fire had really taken hold within the building.
“Firefighters did a great job in getting the fire under control in hot and difficult conditions.”
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
