Parrots rescued from Garden Centre fire

Borough: Oldham

Incident Date: 27 January 2012

At 5:45 pm fire crews were called the report of smoke and fire alarm sounding at a Garden and Pet Centre on Turf Lane, Royton.

When they arrived the firefighters found a fire taking hold of several of the buildings in the complex which make up the site, which the operators had just evacuated.

A total of seven engines and a number of specialist appliances attended the incident and the forty firefighters at the scene contained and extinguished the fire, using breathing apparatus, water jets and a hydraulic platform vehicle.

Unfortunately a number of small animals, kept within the pet section of the site perished due to the fire spreading. At the early stages of the fire a man collapsed at the scene, suffering from a medical condition, not  thought to be directly caused by the effects fire.

During the operation to contain the fire  firefighters located a large wooden shed containing a considerable number of parrots and fancy pigeons which they removed to safety in a temporary location, assisted by members of the RSPCA.

It is likely crews will remain at the scene overnight damping down. The cause of the fire is now the subject of an ongoing investigation.
