Lighter starts fire in bedroom in Bury

Borough: Bury

Incident Date: 16 January 2012

TWO children were taken to hospital after an accidental fire in a semi-detached house in Bury.

Firefighters from Whitefield Fire Station were called to Leyton Drive at 10.10pm on Saturday, January 14, following reports of a fire in a first-floor bedroom.

The children, who are aged eight and three, were playing with a lighter which is believed to have started the fire on a bed.

Both children, along with a 59-year-old woman who was also in the house at the time, were advised by the fire service to get out of the house.

No one was seriously injured but the woman was given oxygen treatment at the scene and was taken to hospital, along with the two children, for a check-up.

Damage was caused to a quantity of bedding, the headboard and the mattress.

Firefighters carried out a Home Safety Check and fitted three smoke alarms in the property.
