Two more cooking fires during Cooking Fire Safety Month

Borough: Trafford

Incident Date: 02 February 2012

GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was called to two cooking-related fires last night. (Thursday, February 2)

On the second day of Cooking Fire Safety Month, crews from Salford Fire Station were called to Stanway Street, Streford, at around 9.10pm following reports of a fire at a terraced house.

Firefighters discovered a fire involving a pan of food which had been left unattended on an electric cooker.

An 11-year-old boy was also discovered in the house suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.

He was given oxygen at the scene by the fire service and taken to hospital for further treatment.

Crews from Wigan Fire Station were called to deal with a fire in Merseyside which started after a pan of food was left unattended on a cooker.

An elderly man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for treatment.

February is cooking fire safety month and GMFRS is reminding residents to take extra care in the kitchen.

Chairman of the Greater Manchester Fire Authority Councillor David Acton said: "So many of the fires we are called to start in the kitchen through carelessness. February is Cooking Fire Safety Month but it is always important to never leave cooking unattended, even to answer the phone or the door. Serious fires can start when you are distracted, even for a few seconds."
