Fire at coke fuel pit in Dukinfield

Borough: Tameside

Incident Date: 02 February 2012

PART of a fuel filtration pit was damaged by fire during an incident at Ashton Water Treatment Works in Ashton Street, Dukinfield.

Firefighters were called to the site just after 2pm on Wednesday (February 1) following reports of a fire involving more than 200 tonnes of fuel coke.

Firefighters used two jets to extinguish the fire and site managers arranged for plant machinery to remove the coke. United Utilities also attended.

Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and the site was safe.

The cause has been put down to children with matches.

Crews were expected to return to the site on Thursday morning to carry out an inspection.
