Carelessly discarded cigarette causes bedroom fire

A PENSIONER was treated for shock after a fire in the bedroom of a semi-detached house in Swinton.

Carelessly discarded smoking materials caused a fire at the house in Deanscourt Avenue on Tuesday. (January 31)

Firefighters from Agecroft Fire Station were called to the house at around 3.20pm after reports of smoke coming from the bedroom.

Crews used breathing apparatus and a Positive Pressure Ventilation fan to clear the fumes and ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

A 65-year-old man was treated at the scene by the fire service and paramedics for shock.

He declined hospital treatment but fire crews fitted two smoke alarms in the house and arranged a free Home Safety Check to take place.

Residents are reminded about he dangers of smoking in the home.

  • Always double-check that your cigarette is fully stubbed out
  • If you're feeling drowsy, are drinking alcohol or are taking prescription drugs, take extra care when smoking
  • Don't light up if you need to lie down and never smoke in bed
  • Don't leave a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe lying around
  • Always keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children
  • Use a proper ashtray and ensure the ashtray is heavy and made of a material that won't burn 
  • Never tap ash into a waste paper basket
