In late 2006 and early 2007, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service sponsored the Late Night Nicksy show on local radio station, Key 103.
Late Night Nicksy was a talk show which addressed the hard-hitting current issues and nitty gritty topics in Greater Manchester. Each night 59,000 people listened to Nicksy, even before the show went live, the phones were red hot with callers hoping to get onto his show. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service ran adverts on the show and participated in programmes which debated relevant topics.
The sponsorship was set up as part of the single male campaign but it also gave Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service an excellent opportunity to engage with the community concerning issues such as attacks on firefighters, arson and hoax calls.
During the bonfire weekend, Jo Lowe and Michelle Pontin from the Late Night Nicksy show spent a night each with watches at Philips Park Fire Station so they could experience some of the incidents and tense situations that crews have to deal with during this time of year. They also recorded interviews with the watches which were used in the show to highlight fire safety and the hard work of our fire crews to the public.
