Bonfire night 2006
In 2005 there were over 260 attacks on Greater Manchester firefighters with a third of these happening during the bonfire season. As a result, in November 2006, we launched a campaign to warn of the consequences of these incidents.
The campaign creative could be seen on 39 billboards across the county (see pictured), as well as on A3 posters. The posters show youths throwing bricks at the windscreen of a fire engine. Leaflets were also produced and an advert ran on local radio warning people of the possible implications of these attacks.

Firework amnesty
In addition to the campaign, we emarked on our first ever firework amnesty to help reduce firework related accidents during the bonfire season. For the launch, 1.5 tonnes of fireworks were collected by the fire service from various locations through the Manchester area and destroyed.
The amnesty allowed members of the public wishing to dispose of fireworks to do so safely by calling a freephone number to arrange for the fire service to collect them. This helped to minimise the potential of fireworks returning to streets or being set off in houses which can cause serious injury or damage to property.
