OUR EMERGENCY RESPONSE

UEFA Cup Final

14 May 2008

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service implemented special procedures last night to enable ourselves to be in a position to respond quickly and safely to any increased activity in and around Manchester City Centre, this was as a result of the earlier disturbances and the large numbers of people in the city centre Iitself and around the Eastlands Stadium. Extra Fire Engines were moved to stations surrounding the city as a precaution and Senior Fire Officers liaised closely with Greater Manchester Police to ensure Public safety was maintained at all times. There was no significant increase in the number of calls received to the city centre throughout the whole evening, although firecrews from Manchester Central were called to Redhill Street off Great Ancoats Street at 2218 hrs to rescue two men who had fallen in to the canal. One male managed to get out of the canal prior to our arrival, Firecrews, with the assistance of Police Officers, then rescued the other male from the canal, both men refused any medical treatment. All fire engines and crews returned to normal duties at 12.30 am on Thursday morning.
