At 11:17hrs Fire Crews from Bolton and Bury responded to reports of a fire in the compound at Plus Polymers on Bradley Fold Industrial Estate, Bradley Fold Road, Radcliffe. Due to the large volumes of smoke being given off from the fire, this was the first of many calls received by Brigade Control.
On arrival Firefighters discovered a 40x40 metre compound full of waste plastic well alight. Approximately 10 cars on an adjacent car park were affected by the fire.
At its height the fire required eight fire engines, including the Operational Support Unit and around 40 firefighters, to get it under control. Extra water supplies were required due to the high winds driving the fire towards adjacent occupied units, four large diameter hose reels were used to bring the fire under control. Firefighters worked extra hard in hot conditions to prevent the fire spreading to nearby buildings.
Three male employees aged, 55, 46 and 46 were all treated for the effects of smoke and slight burns by Ambulance Crews as they attempted to tackle the fire prior to Fire Service arrival.
