EARLIER this week two crews from Eccles Community Fire Station assisted fire crews at Manchester Barton City Airport. The firefighters were there as a safety back up while three Royal Navy Merlin helicopters were refuelled on their way to Scotland for an exercise.
Eccles White Watch: Firefighter Goddard, Watch Manager Martyn Hulme, Firefighter Hilton, Firefighter Rimmer, Watch Manager Denton and Firefighter Jack.
White Watch Manager at Eccles Martyn Hulme said: “It’s important to have extra support when military helicopters are refuelling as they often keep their engines running, which creates a danger of fire. We were positioned 200 meters from the fuel point which gave us one of the best views available.
“The Merlin’s came in one at a time to refuel with the others hovering in formation halfway down one of the runways. We have great a relationship with the airport and are always happy to support any exercises they carry out.”
