The newest firefighters in the county set themselves a challenge in support of the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund (now known as The Fire Fighters Charity) and the Warwickshire Firefighters Appeal.

On Saturday 24th November the 40 recruits split into two teams to take on the Brathay Lakes Challenge in the Lake District, which involved the crew rowing and paddling across the regions three longest lakes using three different craft.

The teams took on Coniston, Ullswater and Windermere covering a total distance of 38.58kilometres and smashed the current record of 10hrs 15mins.

The new firefighters were four weeks into a five week intensive basic training course and the team building charity event forms a part of the course. The trainees decided on the theme of the event and wanted some of the proceeds to go to the families of the Warwickshire firefighters tragically killed on duty.

The event has raised over £5,000 so far. You can still contribute by sending a cheque payable to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service charity events acc 0945765.
