Community initiatives
Heartstart course in Salford
These are just some of the community initiatives that we are involved in…
Beat Sweep
Beat Sweep is community clean-up and safety initiative involving the Police, Fire Service, Council and other organisations. An area is targeted and different agencies go into the area on the same day and carry out work such as cleaning the streets, removing abandoned vehicles and carrying out home fire risk assessments.
Heartstart
In partnership with Heartstart UK, a charity whose aim is to teach people basic life saving skills, 38 firefighters in Salford volunteered and were trained to act as instructors. Since qualifying the firefighters have trained over 500 people in Salford teaching them vital skills that may one day save a life. The free resuscitation classes are held on fire stations throughout Salford and also in various community locations in the city. To find out where and when your nearest class will be held please call 0161 609 0227.
Firefly
Firefly is a week-long programme for young people aged 11 - 17 who are young offenders or have been excluded or are having difficulties at schools and need motivation to modify their behaviour and gain confidence and team building skills.
FIRETEAM
Aimed at school groups aged 14 - 16 and particularly young people who need support at school or have been involved in anti-social behaviour. The programme encourages them to learn about community fire safety and good citizenship. Read more about FIRETEAM.
Education programme
Community fire safety officers are involved in delivering fire safety education to all key stage groups in schools across Salford. All fire stations have a comprehensive programme of primary school visits. During their primary school years children receive fire safety education during years 2 and 5. Cubs, scouts and brownie groups also visit stations during the year. The adult population are engaged through specific talks to local community groups, at local events and by campaigns involving radio, posters and leaflets.
Crucial Crew
Community Fire Safety Staff are also involved in the running of the Crucial Crew scheme, a multi-agency approach to safety in the home for children in Key Stage 2. The event is held once each year and is organised and run in conjunction with the Police, Ambulance Service and other local organisations that provide a wide range of safety information.
Learn Not To Burn
Operational crews are involved in The Learn Not to Burn Quiz, visiting local primary schools and teaching fire safety to children in year 5. The classes provide teams who attend their local fire stations and take part in a knock out fire safety quiz, with the winners going on through various rounds to a grand final.
Prince’s Trust
This volunteer scheme is open to young people aged 16-25 whether in employment or not. We are regarded by the trust as an organisation with high level skills, boundless enthusiasm and a solid reputation of being able to deliver. In Salford the scheme is based at Salford fire station and is Fire and Rescue Service led. Read more about the Prince's Trust Scheme.
Elderly Crucial Crew
A specially adapted Crucial Crew for elderly people, run in conjunction wit the Police and Local Authority. It focuses on safety in the home.
Exclusion units
Our staff visit Exclusion Units in partnership with the Police. We speak to young people about the consequences of vehicle crime, anti-social behaviour and attacks on fire crews.
Students
Salford has a high student population, many of whom are away from home for the first time. These young people are identified as being potentially at risk from fire and fire safety education programmes are used to engage the new students. The programmes also cover misuse of fire alarms in campus buildings.
