Stop Smoking

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service works with partner organisations to reduce the harm caused by smoking. By working with the Greater Manchester Tobacco Alliance, and with local alliances and Stop Smoking Services across the county, we aim to reduce fires caused by carelessly discarded cigarettes (CDSMs) and help to reduce smoking prevalence.

Working in partnership to establish reciprocal referral pathways and training helps to increase the number of referrals our staff make to Stop Smoking Services and the number of referrals their staff make to us for Home Safety Checks. If we can encourage people to access stop smoking services then we can support our partners to reduce smoking prevalence and improve public health, which in turn helps us to tackle one of the underlying causes of fatal fires.

Although carelessly discarded cigarettes are still the top cause of preventable fire deaths in Greater Manchester, accounting for 30% of preventable fire deaths in 2011/12, this is a significant improvement on the figures from five years previously when 56% of preventable fires were caused by CDSMs.

While smoking rates have declined over past decades, the rate of decline has slowed in recent years. Today, 21 per cent of adults in England continue to smoke, and the Department of Health aims to reduce smoking prevalence amongst all adults to 18.5 per cent by 2015.

GMFRS also supports the First Stop Health Bus which was launched in spring by Greater Manchester Public Health Network. The bus travels around Greater Manchester delivering smoking cessation and other health interventions - with GMFRS staff on hand to add another dimension to the fire safety information on the bus and to support the health and stop smoking advisors on board.

For a free Home Safety Check, which could include the fitting of smoke alarms, call GMFRS on 0800 555 815. For further advice on fire safety at home, please visit /fire_safety_advice/home_fire_safety.aspx
