17Dec2010_Oldham_Cooking_Fire

GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service received
reports of a fire involving a domestic property on Hathershaw's
Dowry Street in Oldham at 2.09am on Friday, December 17,
2010.

Three fire crews attended the fire from Oldham and Chadderton
fire stations. When they arrived at the terraced house used a
door ram to enter - rescuing a 29 year old woman from the smoke
logged living room. Paramedics assessed the casualty who was
taken to hospital.

The fire involved the cooker in the kitchen and was tackled by
firefighters using a hose reel whilst wearing breathing
apparatus.

The fire started when cooking was left unattended.

Community Fire Safety Advice

Never leave cooking unattended- even to answer the 'phone or
the door - serious fires can start when your distracted, even for a
few seconds.

When cooking fried food, dry it before you put it in the hot
oil. If the oil starts to smoke, turn off the heat and leave the
pan to cool. Never fill the pan more than one-third full of oil.
Never throw water over the pan.

Smoke Alarms…Your First Line of Defence

Your first line of defence should be a smoke alarm. If there is
a fire, a smoke alarm will immediately warn you, giving you and
everyone in your home time to escape to safety.

Fit smoke alarms on the ceiling on each floor level in your
home - the best places are top of the staircase, stair landing and
between living and sleeping areas (do not fit them in the
kitchen).

Do NOT REMOVE THE BATTERIES - if your smoke alarm keeps going
off it might be too close to the kitchen.

At 01:34 hours fire fighters from Rochdale,
Heywood, Oldham and Hyde were called to the report of a fire on
Albert Royds Street, Bellfield, Rochdale.

When they arrived they found a fire involving a large quantity
of wooden pallets in a storage yard.

08Dec2010_Large_Scale_Exercise_Littleborough

Please be advised that from 7pm tonight (December 8)
there will be a large scale multi-agency training exercise taking
place in the vicinity of Hollingworth Lake, Littleborough,
Rochdale.

The exercise will involve a simulated rescue from icy water
utilising specialist water rescue teams.

Attendance will involve a large number of emergency vehicles and
we would ask that where possible reassurance is conveyed to members
of the public who may have cause for concern.

Winter Safety Advice

Venturing onto frozen ponds, lakes and canals is extremely
dangerous; falling through the ice can so easily have fatal
results. Children are particularly at risk, and parents and
guardians are asked to remind them of the dangers!

Pets are also likely to become stranded if not kept under close
control; this often leads to people risking their own lives to
reach them".

Please remember the following advice!

Do not go onto ice-covered lakes, ponds or rivers - it's not
safe!
(In the event of entering icy water hypothermia can set in very
quickly reducing the ability to get out safely).

The ice closest to the bank may appear to be thick but it
becomes thinner towards the middle.

If a dog or another animal falls through the ice, do not go to
its rescue, if the ice did not support the animal it will not take
your weight!!!!

Do not become a victim; always call the Emergency Services on
999.

If you do see a person or animal in difficulties call 999 and
direct the Emergency Services on their arrival.
