FireTeam

FIRETEAM is two year programme, run half a day a week during school time, for young people who are struggling with their education or have been involved in anti-social behaviour or crime. The project aims to develop their personal and social skills.

Many schools have organised their own alternative curriculum aimed at young people who are either at risk of, or not receiving full time education. FIRETEAM aims to build on the existing good practice by providing a personal development programme for young people aged between 14 and 16.

The schools that use this programme include it in their Alternative Curriculum for Young people who fall into this targeted group.

This course is run over 12 weeks 1 day a week and the young people are encouraged to attend in their half term.

Aims of the Project

  • To reintegrate young people back into mainstream school or encourage them to seek alternative education routes such as college.
  • To deliver an individual learning package of opportunities for young people.
  • To provide a community based alternative to Key Stage 4 curriculum, for young people aged 14-16 years who are not receiving full time education for whatever reason.
  • To reduce the risk of social exclusion.
  • To reduce the risk of criminal or anti-social behaviour.
  • To work with providers of vocational training and alternative activities to meet the aspirations of the young people.
  • Where appropriate young people will be reintegrated back into full time education.

For those for whom returning to mainstream education is not appropriate, the project will provide access to co-ordinated alternative education.  This will be through the young people enrolling on a Fire Service based BTEC, which can be tailored to individual needs, e.g. over 2 years, over 1 year.

FIRETEAM6

FIRETEAM6 is a six week programme aimed at school groups aged 14 - 16.  Run by Firefighters at Fire stations, it involves a mixture of practical activities with a consistent Fire Service theme.

Each FIRETEAM6 course is run in term time for up to 12 people who attend two days per week for six weeks.

A code of conduct will be agreed by the group at the start of every course, and they will be expected to work within this. Other elements of the course include attendees learning about:

  • Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Health & Safety including Manual Handling.
  • Home Fire Risk Assessments.
  • Fire Service Equipment including working with ladders, hose and pumps.
  • Awareness of fire, fire crime including hoax calls and fire setting.
  • Car crime including 'Taking without Consent', car fires, road traffic collisions and the consequences.

Who is FIRETEAM6 aimed at?

FIRETEAM6 is aimed at school groups aged 14 - 16 who:

  • Need support at school.
  • Are at risk of involvement in crime or anti-social behaviour.
  • Want to work with the Fire and Rescue Service.

What are the aims of FIRETEAM6?

  • To educate young people about fire service training.
  • To promote educational achievement.
  • To spread the values of citizenship and social inclusion.
  • To help young people learn about community safety.
  • To provide a community based alternative to the standard Key Stage 4 curriculum for young people at risk of not receiving full time education.
  • To divert children and young people from criminal or anti-social behaviour.
  • To promote fire-safe behaviour and reduce fire crime including fire setting, hoax calls and acts of hostility towards firefighters and other emergency workers.

The aim of the FIRETEAM6 project is to address the needs of young people not attending school, or those at risk of non attendance, and give them enough confidence in using these skills to ultimately feel able to return to school, college or training. Young people not attending school do so for a number of reasons.

These may well include poor literacy and numeracy but could also include, low self esteem, fear of bullying, pregnancy, parental collusion etc. The FIRETEAM6 project has been designed to be able to tackle many of these needs. This course is run 2 days a week for 6 weeks and has run in Salford and Wigan Boroughs.
