Safe4Summer

Young people can have fun while staying safe and out of trouble thanks to the safe4summer initiative being launched in July by Fire and Rescue Service, the Police, local authorities, and GMPTE across Greater Manchester.

Running over the summer holidays, the scheme provides young people and people of all age groups with a wide range of local activities to ward off boredom and the anti-social behaviour that can often follow.

The safe4summer campaign is a fantastic opportunity for everyone in Greater Manchester to safely enjoy the summer holidays. The scheme has been designed to offer young people the chance to experience a whole host of exciting activities available in their local area.  During the long summer break there are occasions when what may appear to be a bit of harmless fun, can be seen differently by other people and could carry some quite serious consequences if it gets out of hand. safe4summer will aim to provide young people with enough interests and activities to banish boredom; it also offers advice about personnel safety and promotes social responsibility messages.

As part of the scheme, a set of posters have been designed that aim to make young people aware of the consequences of their actions. This could be the fear and annoyance they cause to other people through hanging out on street corners, staying out late, drinking alcohol and putting themselves and others in danger by making 999 hoax calls and starting fires.

One of the posters asks parents whether they know where their children are and what they are doing. They are reminded that they have an important role in making sure their children have a safe summer and are not getting into trouble.

Young people and parents can log onto the www.safe4summer.com website that launches on Wednesday 1 July 2009, which explains what the scheme is about and links to the activities pages on the websites of each Greater Manchester’s 10 local authorities.

Chief Superintendent John Rush from Greater Manchester Police said: “safe4summer is a great way to keep children off the streets and stop them causing a nuisance.

“The campaign aims to target anti-social behaviour by encouraging parents and children to work together with local authorities to ensure they have an enjoyable safe summer.”
