About the Dog Handler

My name is mike Dewar and I am 40 years old. I have been in the Fire Service for 19 years and have served at Salford and Broughton areas. I am also a member of the USAR Team (Urban Search and Rescue Awareness) and also the ISAR (International Search and Rescue Team) and have attended serious earthquakes in India in 2001 and Pakistan in 2005 .

Since 2004 I've been working with search and rescue dogs and acquired Echo as a puppy. Echo undertook a demanding 2 years of training that eventually ended up with his successful grading (passing search test) in April of 2006. Echo is a very demanding and head strong dog but was great fun to train and is a good mate not just to me but to the other 2 search dogs Anna and Cracker.

In March of 2007 I became a member of the Fire Investigation team as dog handler with a yellow Labrador called Cracker, she is a fantastic search dog and loves to work and play with her tennis balls. Cracker is the most demanding of the team due to her tireless search drive obsession with her toys .

In April I acquired a new USAR puppy from Kimbelderry Labs in Lancashire called Anna, who will replace Echo when he retires. Anna is a black Labrador and just like Cracker, full of life and loves to play, she is half way through her training (July 09) and is showing great promise.

I love my work with the dogs and they are a vital part of the Fire Service family, Cracker is pro active in the area of Arson Reduction and Echo provides the service with a K9 search capability in the result of a serious building collapse etc.
