Pledges and Partnerships

As your Fire and Rescue Service we recognise the importance of demonstrating public value and our sustainability policy commitments are crucial to this.

However, It's also important for us to realise that we're all part of a bigger picture, and that by joining forces with other groups and networks we can work towards a better, more sustainable future beyond the limits of our own organisation.

Carbon_TrustThe Carbon Trust

In 2008 we partnered up with the Carbon Trust to determine our baseline carbon footprint (see the sustainability strategy). With their expertise and support we have been able to develop a much more thorough knowledge and understanding of areas that can contribute to reducing our service's environmental impact.

Our Sustainability Strategy incorporates our targets and actions to reduce our CO2 emissions by 25% over by 2014. In addition to reducing our environmental impact achieving this target will save £2.73 million of resource costs that would otherwise have been incurred.

Mayday_NetworkThe Prince's Mayday Network

We are a member of The Prince's Mayday Network which is a national network of businesses taking action on climate change and resource depletion. Through the Mayday network, our experiences are being shared with organisations across the country helping us to learn and enabling others to make their own steps towards sustainability. Energy_TrustThe Nottingham Declaration

In 2008, alongside 300 other Local Authorities we signed the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. By signing this Declaration we have formally pledged to systematically address the causes of climate change and to prepare our communities for its impacts.

EnvirolinkEnvirolink North West

We became a member of Envirolink North West's 'Buy Recycled Code' in 2009 and now source recycled products that work as well, or even better than those we have previously used. This helps to reduce our natural resource consumption and our carbon footprint, as well as supporting the manufacturers of recycled products.

British Standard 8555

In 2007, we introduced a new Environmental Management System to enable us to manage our impacts on the environment alongside any legal obligations that may arise from them. This resulted in us obtaining Phase 3 of the British Standard BS8555 in Environmental Management for our entire service - a first for a public sector organisation.

Working with other Fire & Rescue Services

In addition to our external partnerships we also work closely with other Fire and Rescue Services across the UK. In 2008 we formed a NW Fire & Rescue Services Sustainability Network to share innovations and learnings within the region. This group continues to deliver and share a wide array of sustainability focussed programmes. Some examples of the projects being delivered through this network can be found in the short video (comin soon).
