We are constantly working to make your Fire and Rescue Service the
most sustainable and efficient service possible. To achieve that
goal we have set an ambitious goal of reducing our resource
consumption, cutting our associated costs and reaching a 25%
reduction in total CO2 emissions over the next 5 years. Some
highlights to date include:
Between 2008/09 and 2009/10 we cut our direct CO2 emissions from transport by more than 120 tonnes. We now have more than 500 participants in our cycle to work scheme, with an incredible 784,565 miles cycled during 2009, saving more than £100,000 in fuel costs.
We now ensure all our waste is sorted to be recycled when possible. In 2009/10, 55% of our waste was recycled, with over 70% of the remainder going to energy-from-waste. Through this and our water saving measures, we have reduced our carbon footprint from waste and water by 45%.
Between 2008/09 and 2009/10 we cut our CO2 emissions from gas and electricity use by 589 tonnes. Hitting our 25% reduction target stands to save us more than £1.3 million in utility costs by 2015.

In addition to reducing our direct carbon footprint, we are working with our partners and communities on fire prevention and fire safety. This has shown year on year reductions in the number of fires across Greater Manchester, which, as well as protecting lives, has saved a massive 1,910 tonnes in CO2 emissions since 2007.
