OUT of hundreds of entries Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are amongst a small number of organisations to receive Business in the Community's (BITC) National Big Tick award in the Ways2Work category for inspiring greener ways of working and travelling.
The Big Tick award is the first level of award available to entrants of the national Awards for Excellence, which recognise inspirational programmes that are making a positive impact on the community, the environment or wider society.
In addition to receiving this award we have also been short listed for the overall National Example of Excellence for fleet innovation and green travel which will be announced at a Gala Event sponsored by Unilever on 5 July.
THE WAYS2WORK
AWARD
The aim of the ways2work Award is to identify inspiring examples of
innovation and action by organisations reducing the impacts of how
they work and travel in relation to their work and through this to
reward best practice and inspire others to take action.
Business in the Community aims to:
• Encourage businesses to be more strategic and focused on
measurement and proving benefits from investment
• Provide a serious to move working practices and work-related
travel reduction from the periphery to the heart of business
practice by illustrating the wide ranging and business critical
benefits of action in this area
• Generate inspiring examples and case studies of what
organisations are doing in this area
We have achieved this award through our sustainable travel initiatives that have been carried out through a wide range of technologies and policies, including:
We have also exceeded our own ambitious target of a 5% annual decrease in direct CO2 emissions.
If the target of 25% reduction over 5 years is met, then by 2014 the Service will have achieved a saving of more than 1900 tonnes of CO2 emitted, with a cost saving of more than £950,000 from fuel alone.
