Steve joined Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in 1980 and worked at a number of fire stations before being promoted into Fire Safety where he was involved in fire safety design aspects of some of the largest building projects in Greater Manchester.

Steve’s career has been particularly varied and he has undertaken a number of operational and specialist roles including Station Command, Performance Management, Head of Personnel and Training and has also spent a period on secondment to Central Government with Her Majesty's Fire Service Inspectorate as a member of the Brigade Inspection Team.

He has more recently served as Area Commander of one of three Territorial Commands in Greater Manchester before being promoted in May 2005 to his current position as Assistant County Fire Officer with responsibility for Fire Safety and Community Risk Management.  Steve is currently the national lead officer for Fire Safety Technical Standards on behalf of the Chief Fire Officers Association

In the last three years, Steve has also been heavily involved in modernisation of the Fire and Rescue Service, having a leading role as Project Director for the Human Resources Modernisation Change Programme, including the development, design and implementation of new duty systems, a role he describes as being his biggest career challenge to date!
