Fact and figures

  • firefighting1 jpgOur vision is to make Greater Manchester a safer place by being modern, community focused and influential Fire and Rescue Service.
  • In 2006, we attended over 52,000 incidents – over 26,000 were fires and over 1,200 were road traffic collisions.
  • We aim to reach fires where lives and property are at risk within seven minutes on at least 90% of occasions.
  • When people are trapped in a road traffic collision we aim to reach them within eight minutes on 90% of occasions.
  • We only cost the average band D council tax payer £46.38 per year.
  • We provide free Home Fire Risk Assessments carried out by our firefighters. They will advise you on safety in your home and fit free smoke alarms if you need them. You too can get a free home fire safety check and smoke alarm fitted. Book a home fire risk assessment now!
  • It is estimated that we reduce the number of deaths from fire and road traffic collisions by over 128 and reduce property damage by £2 billion each year.
  • Through improved training and procedures and community work, we have reduced hoax calls by over a quarter in the last three years.
  • We have worked hard to reduce deliberate fires by over 2,000.
  • Over the past three years, we have saved over £20 million whilst maintaining and in the majority of cases improving our attendance times.
  • We have looked at how we respond to incidents. Blue lights and sirens are not always needed as driving under blue lights can be dangerous for firefighters and other road users. We have put in place a policy where we go to automatic fire alarms at normal road speed unless we have put information to say there’s a real fire. This has reduced the number of accidents involving fire engines by over 30%.
