ABOUT US

About us

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is the largest Fire and Rescue Service outside London with over 2,500 members of staff and 41 fire stations. We cover an area of approximately 500 square miles and a culturally diverse population of 2.5 million people.

From modern inner city developments to traditional mill towns, Greater Manchester is made of up ten very different districts - Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. Our vision is to make Greater Manchester a safer place by being a modern, community focused and influential Fire and Rescue Service.

Our commitment to you
In 2007 we attended over 49,000 incidents. In Greater Manchester, most areas receive a rapid response with the first fire engine arriving within seven minutes and the second fire engine within nine minutes. The fast response helps to limit the number of fatalities that occur.

We also work in the community carrying out home fire risk assessments, conducting visits to schools and advising businesses on fire safety. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is also committed to supporting and working with children and young people in the region through initiatives such as Fire Cadets, Prince's Trust, FIRETEAM and Firefly.
